What Will Good Time Management Do for You?
It will provide you with one source to handle the details of your daily life - including appointments, lists, "to-do" and notes.

It will accommodate both regular work and maintenance work. Some of the tasks that you do during the week are maintenance tasks. These are the things that (ideally) happen on a cyclical basis: laundry, dentist appointments, housekeeping, holiday shopping and the like.

A good time management system should set you straight. At most, we can adequately fulfill three to five major commitments at any one time. Add more than that and you're fooling yourself. A good system will help you to learn what organizer Barbara Hemphill calls "the art of wastebasketry". It means focusing on the things in your life that matter, and eliminating the rest.

Regular work is everything else that needs to be done: the project for work, taking the red shirt to the dry cleaners, returning phone calls, etc. A good method for managing your time will gracefully deal with both types of work.

It will accommodate both your work and home life. Probably, you have both. And you've probably found that they are not totally separate and compartmentalized. Your time management system should recognize that while you fulfill many roles, you are only living one life.
It will be flexible. After all, you're a person, not a robot. Schedules change, appointments get canceled, heck, you may even just change your mind about something once in a while.

It will help you prioritize. Some things are more important or more urgent than others. Your system should help you recognize these and plan accordingly.

It will help you get a realistic perspective. Do you believe that you can take on four projects at work, head the PTA, stay in great shape, take night school courses, be a great parent and an attentive spouse, all at the same time?
